Albert Promontory Garden | Award-winning landscape comes to life in Battersea Park

22 Jan 2018

A nostalgic blend of pathway and plantscape

Work is complete this month (January 2018) on a stunning new landscape along the Thames beyond Albert Bridge in Battersea Park: the Promontory Garden.  The award-winning design by Keary Design Associates has transformed a hitherto closed and unused area of park just 50m east of Albert Bridge.  Projecting some 12 metres into the River Thames, the Promontory Garden has taken shape over the past three months, funded by Wandsworth Council and the Friends of Battersea Park.  At a cost of £95,000, the new garden’s winning design was selected by the Society of Garden Designers in a design competition at The Landscape Show in 2013.  Chosen for its design excellence in reflecting the English Heritage style and status of the Park and its promise to enhance the riverside views from both banks of the Thames and the park itself, the Promontory Garden’s construction has been underway since November 2017.

Riverside views extended

The Promontory, located towards the north west corner of the park,  was previously a predominantly grassed area with semi-mature and mature trees flanked on all four sides by iron railings.  The new Albert Promontory Garden is now finished (January 2018), awaiting its spring flourish when the herbaceous plants start to show.  Retaining the railings and a number of the existing trees, this carefully considered planting palette and its clean and simple design features curved walkways sympathetic to the Victorian design style utilised along the rest of the Park’s river frontage.

Enable Leisure and Culture manage Battersea Park on behalf of Wandsworth Council.
